Washington, Oct 4 (EFE).- Thousands of women marched Thursday toward the US Supreme Court to protest President Donald Trump’s nominee for the court, Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused by several women of committing sexual assault.
Two days before the Senate is due to vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation, women marched in downtown Washington DC to chant slogans in defense of sexual assault victims and against Trump’s candidate for the Supreme Court.
The demonstration, organized by Women’s March, focused on calling attention to the sexual assault accusations against Kavanaugh made by three women, and most importantly by Christine Blasey Ford, who attended a Senate hearing last week to give an account of her experience, which allegedly took place in 1982.
The case has brought to mind the 1991 Anita Hill hearing, a woman who accused then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment.
“We believe Anita Hill, we believe Christine Ford,” the crowd chanted while marching up Capitol Hill toward the Supreme Court, where some 5,000 people – according to organizers – gathered to urge Senators to vote against Kavanaugh.
The slogans were aimed at convincing moderate Republican senators, like Arizona’s Jeff Flake, who last week pressured
Trump to order the FBI to investigate the sexual assault accusations against Kavanaugh.
One of the women marching on Thursday was Lauren Madlyn, who told EFE that she believed Ford and that she did not think Kavanaugh’s Senate testimony was appropriate.
“I support doctor Ford. More than that, I am very disappointed in Kavanaugh, who came across as an angry man, without showing the temperament required for a judge,” Madlyn said.
After the Cancel Kanavaugh march ended, a few hundred protesters entered a Senate office building, where some were arrested by the police.
