Uruguayan official calls immigration positive for education

Montevideo, Oct 2 (EFE).- A member of Uruguay’s Primary Education Council said Tuesday that the arrival of immigrants helps build “respect and tolerance” among students.

“It’s hard to think of actions and international understanding of peoples where there are no experiences of diversity, where there is no respect for what is different, where there is no comprehension that democratic construction is based and ground on the existence of profiles, people, wills and cultures that are different,” Hector Florit said at an event in Montevideo.

He advocated the restoration of the principles that lay behind what Florit described as the “institutional matrix of the Uruguayan school.”

Another speaker at the event, Cultural Heritage commissioner Elena Pareja, who highlighted the importance of migration to the formation of Uruguay’s national character.
