Los Angeles, USA, Sep 17 (EFE).- The 70th Emmy Awards, the most important television awards, began on Monday in Los Angeles, California, with a hard-fought duel between “Game of Thrones”, with 22 nominations; “Westworld”, with 21, and “The Handmaid’s Tale”, with 20.

The event kicked off at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles from 17.00 local time (00.00 GMT on Tuesday) with Colin Jost and Michael Che from American late-night variety show “Saturday Night Live” as masters of ceremonies.

“Game of Thrones”, the most awarded and nominated series in the history of the Emmy, made a major comeback to this event after winning the best drama series for two years in a row. The series was absent in the 2017 Emmy Awards due to the delay of its seventh season, preventing the show from registering for the award in time.

“Game of Thrones”, which already won seven Emmys in technical categories last week, will compete for the Outstanding Drama Series award against “The Americans”, “The Crown”, “Stranger Things”, “This is Us”,”Westworld”and “The Handmaid’s Tale”, which won the Emmy best series award in 2017.

As for the the Outstanding Comedy Series award, “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” are among the nominated shows, taking over the category from “Veep”, which brought home the trophy for three consecutive years.

“Barry”, “Black-ish”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, “GLOW”, “Silicon Valley” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” are also nominated.

The Outstanding Limited Series award will be decided among “The Alienist”, “American Crime Story: The Assassination Of Gianni Versace”, “Godless”, “Patrick Melrose” and “Genius: Picasso”.

The 70th Emmy Award, the first held after the scandals of sexual harassments in Hollywood and the subsequent “Me Too” movement broke out in 2017, could see Elisabeth Moss, lead actress of dystopian series “The Handmaid’s Tale”, repeat her victory as the Outstanding Lead Actress this year.
