Washington, Nov 19 (EFE).- The cast of the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” expressed alarm about the incoming U.S. head of state with Vice President-elect Mike Pence in the audience, reading a letter at the end of the performance that said “the diverse America” was fearful of Donald Trump’s future administration.
Pence, who leads the real-estate mogul’s transition team, took a break Friday night to see one of Manhattan’s most critically acclaimed musicals of all time, but the spotlight unexpectedly fell on him.
The video clip of a cast member reading the letter to Pence after the performance has gone viral on Twitter and other social-networking sites.
“We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir,” African-American actor Brandon Victor Dixon told Pence from the stage.
“But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us,” he added as the crowd erupted in applause.
Pence, who had been booed as he entered the theater, was already leaving his seat but listened to the message from the hallway outside the entrance to the auditorium at New York’s Richard Rogers Theatre, a spokesman for the musical told the New York Times.
“Hamilton,” which tells the story of the birth of the United States and features black and Hispanic actors in the roles of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington and other Founding Fathers of the nation, stresses the idea that America is a country of immigrants.
Trump won the Nov. 8 election thanks in large part to his ability to tap into the socioeconomic frustrations of white Americans and despite coming under fire for, among other things, his harsh comments about undocumented Mexican migrants.
Trump responded early Saturday on Twitter to the incident, saying his vice president had been harassed and demanding an apology.
Dixon then tweeted to Trump: “Conversation is not harassment sir. And I appreciate @Mike_Pence for stopping to listen.”
