Democrats officially nominate Kaine for V.P.

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine was confirmed here Wednesday as the Democratic Party’s 2016 candidate for vice president of the United States.

A day after making Hillary Clinton the first female major party presidential candidate in U.S. history, delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia approved her V.P. pick by voice vote in a departure from the usual protocol.

“The chair will entertain a motion to suspend the rules and nominate Tim Kaine by acclamation as the vice presidential candidate of the Democratic Party,” the convention chair, Ohio Rep. Marcia Fudge, said.

“Is there a second?,” she continued.

“All in favor of the motion to suspend the rules and nominate by acclamation Tim Kaine as the Democratic party’s vice presidential candidate, please say aye,” Fudge said.

Amid a mix of applause and protests, the chair declared the motion approved with the support of two-thirds of the 4,763 delegates.

Some delegates who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders in the race for the presidential nomination were thought to be planning to mount a challenge to Kaine.

Kaine, 58, was mayor of Richmond and Virginia governor before being elected to the Senate, where he has served on the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.

He is fluent in Spanish thanks to a year spent working with missionaries in Honduras.

Kaine’s speech formally accepted the vice-presidential nomination is set for Wednesday night.
