The Democratic hopeful for the White House, Hillary Clinton, said Tuesday that together with former rival Bernie Sanders, she will beat Republican candidate Donald Trump and will build a new future for the United States.
After being endorsed by the Vermont senator in their first joint campaign appearance in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Clinton thanked the lawmaker for his support, and acknowledged his work in the campaign that has inspired “a generation of young people who care deeply about our country and are building a movement that is bigger than one candidate or one campaign.”
“Thank you for your lifetime of fighting injustice,” the ex-secretary of state told Sanders, while assuring his followers that “I am proud to be fighting alongside you, because, my friends, this is a time for all of us to stand together.”
“To everyone here and everyone across the country who poured your heart and soul into Senator Sanders’ campaign, thank you,” she said.
Clinton said that in recent weeks she has worked with Sanders on plans “so future students won’t have to borrow a dime to attend public colleges or universities” and on “expanding Social Security to match today’s realities, not cut or privatize it.”
“This election, let’s send a clear message,” she said. “In America, we don’t tear each other down; we lift each other up. We build bridges, not walls. We put common interest ahead of self-interest. We stand together because we’re stronger together.
“Just as Bernie said, over the years, I’ve gotten to know him as a colleague and a friend. His reputation for passionate advocacy hasn’t always made him the most popular person in Washington, but you know what, that’s generally a sign you’re doing something right,” the ex-secretary of state said.
Sanders, who won more than 12 million votes during the Democratic primaries, has strongly urged the party to include in its political platform more social content aimed at aiding the poorer, more vulnerable classes, and took more than a month to admit his defeat by the former first lady.
